School Life
In Cruce Salus | Salvation through the Cross
At Holy Cross we offer a wide range of opportunities that help our learners grow academically, culturally, physically and socially. From the classroom to the sports field, from the music hall to the computer centre, our pupils are encouraged to explore their interests, develop their talents and become confidence, well-rounded individuals.
Culture & Music
At Holy Cross, we believe the performing arts encourage creativity, confidence and self-expression.
Our Music Department offers piano, recorder, violin and singing, as well as opportunities to participate in our Junior and Senior Choirs, Vocal Ensemble and Instrumental Ensemble. Learners take part in festivals, competitions, examinations, concerts and community events, with regular success at the George Eisteddfod, Mossel Bay Eisteddfod and Young Musicians Competition.
Our Drama programme gives learners the opportunity to develop their communication, performance and creative skills. Learners participate annually in the George Eisteddfod in speech choir, reading, poetry, prose, dramatized prose and group projects.
Every three years, the school stages a major production, giving every learner the opportunity to participate, with the Junior and Senior Phases taking turns to perform. We also celebrate our learners’ talents through special events such as our 130th Birthday Talent Show.

Sport
Holy Cross has a strong and vibrant sporting culture, with an emphasis on participation, teamwork and developing every learner’s potential. We host annual tournaments and regularly compete against schools across the region.
Our sporting facilities include a 25m heated indoor swimming pool, extensive sports fields and a multi-purpose AstroTurf, which supports hockey, tennis, soccer, netball, cricket, PE and general play.
Learners have opportunities to participate in:
Boys: Cricket, swimming, athletics, tennis, rugby and hockey
Girls: Swimming, athletics, tennis, netball and hockey
Throughout the year: Chess
External opportunities: Horse riding and golf
Hockey is our largest sporting code, with approximately 300 learners participating. Our U/13A Hockey team also takes part in the annual Kingswood Derby.
For sporting or coaching enquiries, please contact the Front Office.
Computers & Technology
We are proud of our well-equipped computer centre and research lab, which is offered to our pupils. They have accss to a variety of educational programmes, the Internet and numerous English and Maths programmes.
These programmes are used for reinforcement, remedication and extension purposes. Our weekly Computer lessons teach the pupils the necessary skills in the Office Suite (e.g. MSWord, MSExcel, MSPowerPoint), the Google Suite (Google Classroom, Docs, Sheets and Slides) as well as computer skills.
We have installed interactive Whiteboards in most of our classrooms. These are linked to a data projector and computer, allowing for dynamic and engaging lessons.
Library
The air-conditioned Library is well stocked and the pupils have access to a wide range of fiction and non-fiction books, all of which are scanned on the computer. Weekly lessons are given by our Librarian and special theme days are celebrated to ensure that a love of reading is developed from a young age.
2025 was a very special year for Holy Cross Primary School as we celebrated 130 years of faith, education, community and tradition.
For 130 years, Holy Cross has been a place where learners have been encouraged to grow in knowledge, faith and character. The values and legacy of the Holy Cross Sisters continue to inspire our school community and remain an important part of who we are.
Our 130th anniversary celebrations brought together past and present learners, staff, families and friends of Holy Cross. From our special Thanksgiving Mass and school tour to our historical art exhibition, Timeless Talent concert, Golf Day and various community events, the celebrations gave us an opportunity to remember our rich history and create new memories together.
As we celebrated this remarkable milestone, we reflected with gratitude on the many generations who have helped shape Holy Cross into the school it is today.
130 years later, our journey continues – honouring our past, celebrating our present and inspiring our future.
